AI Landscape Shifts: Google’s Gemini, Grok Challenge OpenAI’s ChatGPT Dominance

A new report from venture firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) reveals that ChatGPT‘s lead in the consumer AI market is being challenged by rivals like Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok, signaling a rapidly evolving landscape. The report, based on two and a half years of consumer usage data, indicates a growing competitive pressure on OpenAI’s popular chatbot.

The Established players Remain at the Forefront

For the fifth consecutive iteration, 14 companies consistently appear among the top AI products: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, civitai, and Hugging Face. These companies represent the diverse ways consumers are leveraging AI, spanning general assistance, creative companionship, image and video editing, voice generation, productivity tools, and AI model hosting.

Five additional companies – Claude, DeepAI, Janitor AI, Pixelcut, and Suno – have featured in all but the first report, demonstrating sustained consumer engagement in areas like general AI use, companionship, image editing, and music generation.

Google Gains Ground with Gemini and AI Studio

Notably, Google has made notable strides, securing four spots on the list of top generative AI consumer web products with Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs.The tech giant’s decision to establish separate domains for these products has enabled more precise tracking of their individual growth.According to a16z,the report’s data is sourced from third-party market intelligence firms Similarweb and sensor Tower.

Gemini, currently the No. 2 app,is steadily closing the gap with ChatGPT on mobile devices,though it still boasts roughly half the monthly active users. The report highlights that Gemini‘s technology is particularly popular on Android,where it commands nearly 90% of its monthly active user base.On the web, Gemini trails ChatGPT, capturing approximately 12% of ChatGPT‘s web traffic.

google’s AI Studio, a developer-focused platform for building with Gemini models, has enabled more precise tracking of its individual growth.

The report also highlights the emergence of “vibe-coding” apps, catering to a growing demand for more personalized and interactive AI experiences. Lovable and Replit, both focused on vibe-coding, have also debuted on the main list.

a16z identified several apps on the cusp of entering the top rankings, including pixai, Bolt, Blackbox AI, Clipchamp, and Getliner on the web, and Talkie, Seekee, Photo AI, AI Mirror, and Arvin on mobile. The firm notes that the mobile app landscape is becoming more competitive, with 14 newcomers featured in this month’s report, driven by app stores cracking down on ChatGPT clones and fostering more original applications.
