Reckless Driver Arrested After High-Speed Chase and Crashes on Lee Highway

A driver exhibiting reckless driving behavior was apprehended Sunday night following a pursuit and multiple collisions along Lee Highway in Tennessee. The incident, which unfolded after authorities received reports of a silver SUV endangering other motorists, resulted in the arrest of Sterling Patterson and a stern warning from local law enforcement regarding impaired driving.

Initial Reports and Pursuit

Around 8 p.m. on Sunday, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) issued a “be on the lookout” alert for a silver SUV reportedly driving erratically on Lee Highway, originating from Bradley County. According to the HCSO release, the vehicle was observed swerving and forcing other cars off the roadway. Shortly after, dispatchers confirmed the SUV had been involved in a crash near the intersection of Lee Highway and Edgemon Road in Collegedale.

When deputies arrived at the 10100 block of Lee Highway, the driver allegedly attempted to flee, initiating a pursuit. During the chase, authorities say the suspect continued driving recklessly southbound. The SUV subsequently collided with another vehicle in the 9300 block of Lee Highway, but continued onward before being disabled by deputies utilizing a legal intervention technique.

The driver was identified as Sterling Patterson. Authorities confirmed Patterson was operating the vehicle with a revoked license and was taken into custody. Patterson now faces a comprehensive list of charges, including:

  • Evading arrest

  • Reckless endangerment
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving on a revoked license
  • Leaving the scene of an accident

Sheriff’s Warning Ahead of Super Bowl

The incident prompted a strong statement from Sheriff Austin Garrett, who emphasized the dangers of impaired driving, particularly in light of recent public safety messages issued ahead of the Super Bowl. “Apparently, this driver did not heed my safety message leading up to the Super Bowl and should’ve been in an Uber or with a designated driver,” Garrett stated. He concluded with a firm warning: “Word of advice: Don’t ever drink and drive, and don’t ever run from this Sheriff’s Office. We don’t tolerate lawlessness in this county.”
