YouTuber Chavik Shankar has been shifted to Cuddalore jail. The prison administration informed that due to administrative reasons, he was taken away under tight security at midnight.
Chennai-based YouTuber Savuk Shankar. The Madurai Division of the High Court had sued him for contempt of court for posting comments on his Twitter account that ‘the judiciary is tainted with corruption’. The case was investigated by Justices GR Swaminathan and B. Bhujahendi.
When this case came up for hearing, Savuk Shankar, who was present in the court, said, “We need time to file a reply to the contempt of court petition. He said that the court should provide me with the video recordings and other records indicating the reason for taking the contempt action. And he said that he is firm in his opinion. In this case, the contempt of court case came up for hearing again yesterday in the session of Judges GR Swaminathan and B. Bhujahendi. Then Chavku Shankar appeared in person.
Senior advocate Somayaji, who was appointed as amicus curiae in the case, argued. Last evening, the judges sentenced Chavku Shankar to 6 months imprisonment in the contempt of court case. Following this he was lodged in Madurai Central Jail. Chavku Shankar has been transferred from Madurai Central Jail to Cuddalore Jail in the middle of the night.
The Central Prison Department informed that the change of prison was done for administrative reasons. YouTuber Chavik Shankar was taken to Cuddalore Jail under heavy police protection due to the threat posed by him, the Jail Department informed.
