For connoisseurs of lua, good news: there will be two supermoons in August. The first will be at the beginning of the month, this Tuesday, the 1st; and the second on the 30th. This phenomenon occurs because every 27.3 days the satellite makes a complete turn around the planet, but not in a circular way, but as an ellipse, which is a kind of flattened circle. So, there are moments during the year when the moon is closest to Earth, the so-called perigee. Right now the average distance between the satellite and Earth averages 362,000 kilometers. This Tuesday, for example, the moon will be 357,530 kilometers away from us. On August 30, the distance will be even smaller: 357,344 kilometers. “Observers will be able to notice a moon brighter than other moons. The phenomenon can be seen in all regions of the planet, as long as the weather is favorable”, says Josina Nascimento, astronomer at the National Observatory. At perigee, the moon appears 7% larger due to its proximity to Earth, and 15% brighter because it reflects more sunlight back to the planet.
