Despite the tense situation in the retail sector and numerous efforts to revitalize the inner cities, there should only be two Sunday shopping in Chemnitz this year – and this only in the city center. According to the city’s assessment, additional appointments or spatial expansion are not possible for legal reasons, said mayor Miko Runkel on Friday. Earlier, more far-reaching regulations of the city had been declared inadmissible in court following legal action by the Verdi service union. Even the “Days of Industrial Culture”, which has been held annually for many years and on the weekend of which the shops in Chemnitz were also allowed to open for a few hours on Sundays, were therefore not sufficient as a special occasion to allow shopping on Sundays.

As things stand at the moment, there will only be Sunday shopping on the first and third Advent (November 28 and December 12) this year. The city council, however, has the final say. He will deal with the subject in his next meeting in a week and a half. Should the Free State allow further appointments in view of the special situation after months of trade restrictions due to the corona pandemic, the city will not ignore this request, assured Runkel. “But this question must be clarified at the state level,” he emphasized. Mayor Sven Schulze (SPD) had repeatedly spoken out in favor of more Sunday shopping.
