Chennai IIT is in the process of developing ‘Zinc A’ batteries to replace ‘lithium ion’ batteries in electric vehicles. Researchers are actively involved.

Arvind Kumaran Chandran, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Chennai, and his research team are working on a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion batteries. They are focusing on ‘Zinc-A’ batteries because zinc is widely available.

‘Zinc-A’ batteries are long-lived because they are water-based. And have good performance. Also available at low prices.

The research team that applied for this new battery technology patent has been working with leading industry companies to develop zinc-a batteries. Zinc-A batteries can be used in two-wheelers and three-wheeled electric vehicles.

Aravind Kumar Chandran, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, said: We are exploring deficiencies in existing technology and finding ways to fix them. He is currently involved in the development of zinc-A cells and the development of the zinc-A package for electric vehicles.

Like petrol stations, ‘zinc refueling stations’ should be set up separately. If you use zinc-A batteries, you can come to these stations and refill them, just as you would at a gas station when refueling. Fully recycled ‘Zinc Cassettes’ can be exchanged at ‘Zinc Recovery Stations’. Researchers are also trying to recycle used zinc cassettes with solar panels.

Domestically made ‘Zinc-A’ batteries suitable for the Indian environment are highly safe due to their hydraulic charge. He said that electric vehicles do not catch fire even in the worst moments of an accident.
