Elections for mayor, deputy mayor, president and vice president for municipalities and corporations began at 10 a.m. today.
R. Priya (28) from DMK was elected unopposed as the Mayor of Chennai Corporation. As BJP member Uma Anandan arrived at the Ribbon House in Chennai, none of the 15 AIADMK members came to contest the by-elections. In this situation, R. Priya from DMK was elected as the Mayor of Chennai Corporation without contest. Chennai Commissioner Kagandeep Singh Bedi administered the oath of office to him and presented him with the robe for the mayor. R. Priya has been elected as the first woman mayor of Chennai Corporation. It is noteworthy that R. Priya has the distinction of being the Mayor of Chennai at a very young age.
