Chennai Meteorological Department weather forecast and alerts: Heavy rains expected in several districts and coastal areas

The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a press release warning of heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to the release, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai districts and Puducherry, Karaikal regions may experience heavy to very heavy rains, while Chennai, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Kallakurichi districts may experience heavy rains at one or two places.

The release stated that an atmospheric downward circulation prevails over the northeast coast and the southeast Arabian Sea regions, leading to the anticipated heavy rainfall. The forecast for the coming days is as follows:

– 08.01.2024: Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected at many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Karaikal. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in several districts, including Chennai.
– 09.01.2024: Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected in South-East and a few places in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with heavy rain expected in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts.
– 10.01.2024: Light to moderate rain may occur in Southeast and a couple of places in North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with heavy rain expected in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Tuticorin districts.
– 11.01.2024 to 13.01.2024: Light to moderate rain is forecasted at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with dry weather expected on 14.01.2024.

The weather forecast for Chennai and suburbs indicates mostly cloudy skies and the possibility of moderate to heavy rain in some parts, with temperatures ranging from 22-29°C.

Fishermen in the area have also been alerted to cyclonic winds with speeds of 40 to 45 kmph and occasional gusts of 55 kmph expected over various coastal areas from 08.01.2024 to 12.01.2024.

Chief Minister Stalin has instructed District Collectors to take necessary precautions to address the impact of the heavy rains. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary safety measures.
