Chennai’s Buckingham Canal Crossed by OMR

These two major highways see heavy traffic during peak hours, and the proposed link road aims to improve the connectivity between them by crossing the canal. The study is being carried out by consultants, and a detailed project report is being prepared by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Corporation, which includes plans for a flyover on the banks of the Buckingham Canal and connecting internal roads with a perimeter flyover. The cost of the initial link road connecting OMR-ECR roads in Neelangarai to the Buckingham Canal was Rs 18 crore.

Chennai: A policy briefing note by the Highways Department said that a study is being done to connect the OMR-ECR roads across the Buckingham Canal.

ECR and OMR are the major highways of Chennai. Traffic on these roads is heavy in the morning and evening hours. In this case, a study is being done to connect these two roads by crossing the Buckingham Canal, according to a policy briefing note of the Highways Department.

In it, ‘The link road connecting OMR-ECR roads in Neelangarai has been completed from OMR to Buckingham Canal at a cost of Rs 18 crore. A study is being carried out by consultants to connect the ECR Road across the Buckingham Canal.

Further, a detailed project report is being prepared by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Corporation for the construction of a flyover on the banks of the Buckingham Canal, connecting internal roads and a perimeter flyover across the Buckingham Canal,’ it said.
