Cheongdo County Governor Kim Ha-su is making all-out efforts to resolve the drinking water problem of the county residents who are suffering from water shortages in the heat wave. Cheongdo County (Governor Kim Ha-su) made an emergency protest visit to the Unmun branch of the Korea Water Resources Corporation on the 6th to represent the public opinion of the county residents who have been suffering from water shortages in the heat wave since the 4th and to proactively overcome the problem.
The water shortage in some highlands, which started in the afternoon of the 4th, had cut off water supply to up to 2,480 households in Hwayang-eup, Gaknam, Punggak, Gakbuk, and Iseo-myeon, Cheongdo-gun, as of 6:00 PM on the 5th.
This was due to a water shortage caused by a sudden drop in the water level of the Iseo Reservoir, which led to an increase in water usage compared to usual due to the heat wave and the many tourists visiting Cheongdo County during the peak summer vacation season, which caused the maximum daily output of Unmun Water Purification Plant to exceed 21,500 tons.
Accordingly, Cheongdo County has been working day and night since the 4th to distribute 13,000 1.8L bottles of water to township and district offices and households without water supply, and to provide emergency water supply using 26 water trucks (15 tons and more).
In parallel, in order to solve the fundamental problem of insufficient daily maximum discharge volume of Unmun Water Purification Plant, several consultations were held with the Unmun Branch of Korea Water Resources Corporation, but due to the seriousness of the situation, the Cheongdo County Governor made an emergency protest visit that day.
Kim Ha-su, the governor of Cheongdo County, actively protested to the head of the Unmun District Office, saying, “This incident is a disaster situation, and the emotional pain felt by the people of Cheongdo County is indescribable. In order for our people to be able to safely receive water from our region, we must quickly resolve the suffering of the people by further increasing the purified water volume in the short term. In the long term, please push forward with the Unmun Dam water supply tunnel and double-tracking project in conjunction with the expansion of the Unmun Water Purification Facility so that such incidents never happen again.”
Lastly, he also ordered, “If the clean environment of Dongchangcheon is destroyed by Unmun Dam, it will cause great suffering to local residents and tourists, so the daily maintenance water discharge from Unmun Dam should be doubled.”
