Cheongdo-gun won the grand prize in the resource circulation category of the 19th 2024 Republic of Korea Environmental Awards for the fifth consecutive year. Cheongdo-gun (Governor Kim Ha-su) won the grand prize in the resource circulation category for the fifth consecutive year at the 19th 2024 Republic of Korea Environmental Awards held at the SME DMC Tower in Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 5th.

On this day, about 30 people including Cheongdo County Governor Kim Ha-su, Cheongdo County Saemaul Movement Chairman Jeon In-ju, and Saemaul Movement 4 group chairmen and leaders attended the awards ceremony and shared the honor of receiving the Republic of Korea Environment Award for 5 consecutive years.

The Korea Environment Awards, now in its 19th year, is hosted by the Korea Environment Awards Committee and sponsored by central government ministries including the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. It aims to encourage the implementation and activities of a sustainable, eco-friendly society and to honor organizations, individuals, and local governments that have made efforts with an eco-friendly approach from the living environment including food, clothing, and shelter, to product production, distribution, and consumption, including housing, policy, management, education, culture, tourism, and services. It is the most prestigious award in the environmental field in Korea and has been awarded annually since 2005.

Cheongdo-gun has built a golden tower of winning the ‘Grand Prize’ in the resource circulation sector for five consecutive years, starting in 2020. This achievement was not only due to the ‘Saemaul Environmental Salvation (Recycling Product Competition)’ that has been held without fail every year for 25 years since March 2000, but also the expansion of the ‘Clean House’, a recycling facility, to all towns and counties, and the installation of recycling centers in Gaknam-myeon and Geumcheon-myeon. Cheongdo-gun’s efforts to spread the resource circulation movement were selected as excellent examples and achieved the feat of winning the grand prize for five consecutive years.

Kim Ha-su, the governor of Cheongdo County, said, “I consider it an infinite honor to have won the Republic of Korea Environment Award, the most prestigious environmental award in Korea, for five consecutive years.” He added, “We will continue to promote the ‘Saemaul Environmental Saving’ project, a unique alternative unique to Cheongdo, the birthplace of the Saemaul Movement, to the global issues of the global climate crisis and carbon neutrality, and develop it into a second Saemaul Movement by transitioning to a green economy through the practice of carbon neutrality in everyday life.”
