Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark has been successfully redesignated for the second time. Cheongsong-gun has successfully redesignated Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark for the second time, proving its value as a small but strong international tourist city.

Cheongsong-gun received a ‘Green Card’, signifying re-designation, from the UNESCO Global Geoparks Executive Board at the 8th General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Global Geoparks Network (APGN) held in Cao Bang, Vietnam, and will maintain its status as a UNESCO Global Geopark for four years from January 2025 to December 2028.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are re-evaluated every four years to determine whether or not to be re-designated. If a site receives a green card after an on-site inspection, the status can be maintained for four years, but if it receives a yellow card, the designation period is shortened to two years. If the problems are not improved within that period, it receives a red card, losing its UNESCO Global Geopark status. Strict evaluation criteria are applied.

Cheongsong-gun received an on-site inspection for re-designation in July, and after the inspection, the evaluation team highly evaluated the successful implementation of the recommendations made at the time of the last re-designation, such as improving the visibility of the geological park, strengthening educational capacity, and improving the management structure, and in particular, expanding programs that had been operated primarily for infants and children to seniors, and expanding programs that had been operated in certain regions to the entire Cheongsong-gun.

Cheongsong County plans to actively promote the excellence of Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark internationally by participating in the 8th Asia-Pacific Global Geoparks Network (APGN) General Assembly, presenting the operation case of Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark and operating a promotional booth, and actively promoting the establishment of a network and strengthening exchanges and cooperation among global geoparks.

Yoon Kyung-hee, the governor of Cheongsong County, said, “This re-designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark is a result of international recognition of Cheongsong’s geological, resource, and cultural values, as well as the educational tourism programs that utilize these values,” and added, “We will continue to actively utilize the UNESCO Global Geopark brand and do our best for sustainable development.”
