Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the torch relay for the 44th Chess Olympiad to be held in Chennai next month at an event in Delhi this evening.
The 44th Chess Olympiad will be held from July 28 to August 10 at Mamallapuram near Chennai.
For the first time in the history of the Chess Olympiad, a show called ‘Torch Run’ will be launched this year. Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate it at 5 pm today at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Delhi.
In it, chess and sports stars are to take part. Earlier, President of the International Chess Federation Arkady Dvorkovich formally handed over the torch to Prime Minister Modi.
It will be presented by Prime Minister Modi to Grand Master Viswanathan. To popularize the Chess Olympiad and mobilize public support, the torch relay travels to 74 cities.
With more than 3,000 participants from 190 countries, this tournament will be the most competitive in the Chess Olympiad.
This is the first time in the 100-year history of the Chess Olympiad that India is hosting this prestigious event.
