Chest Pain Unit: Fulda Clinic Receives Certification for Rapid Response Unit

FULDA – The Medical Clinic I (Cardiology) of the Cardiothoracic Center at Klinikum Fulda has recently received certification for its Chest Pain Unit (CPU) from the German Society for Cardiology. This specialized diagnostic and therapy unit for the rapid treatment of patients with acute chest pain has been established to ensure that patients receive prompt care.

“We have set the course to provide our patients with the best possible care in the future,” says Prof. Dr. Volker Schächinger, Director of the Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology, and Intensive Care Medicine at Klinikum Fulda. The CPU operates as a specialized emergency room that is open around the clock and is connected to the monitoring station. It utilizes standardized processes to quickly diagnose and treat the cause of chest pain. Promptly diagnosing or ruling out a heart attack is crucial, as it allows for timely initiation of appropriate therapies.

“In cases of sudden chest pain, there is always the suspicion of a heart attack, and quick action is necessary since time determines the extent and consequences of heart damage,” adds Schächinger. It is essential to alert emergency services immediately at the first sign of severe, long-lasting chest pain, burning and tightness in the chest, vomiting, and/or shortness of breath. If an electrocardiogram (ECG) shows clear signs of a heart attack, the patient is taken directly to the clinic for a heart catheter examination.

For cases where the cause of the symptoms is unclear, the CPU is equipped to conduct further examinations to identify the underlying issues. An expert team consisting of doctors and nurses carries out these investigations. If a serious clinical condition is ruled out, patients can be quickly discharged. However, if a heart attack is confirmed, the necessary heart catheter examination is conducted immediately. If significant narrowing of the coronary arteries is detected, a stent can be inserted to alleviate the condition. Chest pain can also be caused by other factors, and the CPU provides appropriate recommendations for further diagnostics and treatments.

“With the Chest Pain Unit, we can offer our patients rapid, high-quality diagnostics and therapy, and provide our referring doctors and other hospitals with a competent contact person around the clock who can advise them in emergencies and take care of their patients,” explains Prof. Dr. Schächinger.

The certification of the Chest Pain Unit signifies the Fulda Clinic’s commitment to providing excellent care for patients experiencing acute chest pain. The CPU’s team of trained medical professionals ensures that patients receive timely and accurate diagnoses, enabling the implementation of appropriate treatment plans.]
