Chevening Scholarships Open for Fully Funded UK Master’s Degrees

The United Kingdom government has officially opened its application cycle for the Chevening Scholarships, offering fully funded master’s degree opportunities to emerging leaders across the globe. Applications run through October 6, 2026, targeting professionals with strong leadership potential, regional experience, and a commitment to driving sustainable international development.

Global Reach and Application Timelines

The flagship international awards scheme provides successful applicants with access to world-class education, professional networks, and lifelong connections via the global Chevening community. Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, the scholarship supports a one-year master’s degree at any participating university across the UK.

Timelines and eligibility frameworks vary slightly by region. For students in Bangladesh, applications for the 2026–27 academic term opened on August 5, 2025, with an application deadline of October 7, 2025. Following independent reading committee reviews through January 2026, shortlisted candidates face interviews in the spring before final results roll out in mid-June 2026. Successful applicants must secure at least one unconditional offer from an eligible UK university by July 9, 2026, ahead of studies beginning in September or October 2026.

Meanwhile, the general application window for the 2026 scholarships runs from August 4 to October 6, 2026. Applicants must meet strict criteria, including holding an undergraduate degree, committing to return to their home country for at least two years post-scholarship, and acquiring a minimum of 2,800 hours—roughly two years—of professional work experience following undergraduate graduation.

Regional Impact Across South Asia and Beyond

Since its inception in 1983, Chevening has supported more than 60,000 professionals spanning over 140 countries and territories. In India, where the scholarship scheme represents the largest cohort worldwide, the programme has benefited 4,000 awardees over more than four decades.

Demographic figures from the recent Indian cohort highlight a distinct shift toward grassroots representation. Over 75% of scholars hail from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, with a significant proportion identifying as first-generation learners, while women comprise 68% of the participants.

In Pakistan, the British High Commission in Islamabad recently hosted a pre-departure reception for 33 scholars set to travel to the UK for postgraduate studies under both the Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship frameworks. British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott characterized the initiative as one of the clearest examples of the UK-Pakistan partnership in action, noting that these investments target individuals equipped with the talent and purpose to effect tangible change.

Leadership Expectations and Future Priorities

Global administrators stress that the selection process looks beyond academic transcripts. Emma Hennessey, Head of The Scholarships Unit at the FCDO, noted that candidates are evaluated on their ability to build meaningful connections and address shared international challenges.

I encourage anyone considering applying to reflect carefully on Chevening’s vision and purpose, and on how their own experiences and ambitions align with the impact our global community is working to achieve.

Similarly, Jonny Baxter, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, urged eligible professionals to take the next step in their leadership journey by aligning their personal visions with areas of shared bilateral priority.

As current application windows remain active, returning scholars swell an international alumni network that now populates senior roles across government, business, civil society, and academia. With local partnerships expanding scholarship slots into specialized areas like climate studies, heritage, and biological robotics, the programme continues to adapt its educational footprint to meet evolving global priorities.
