Chicago Bears Wrap Up Joint Practices with Colts; Justin Fields to Sit Out Preseason Game

by time news

The Chicago Bears concluded their joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday at the Grand Park Sports Campus. The intense practice sessions were aimed at helping the team prepare for their upcoming preseason game against the Colts on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium. However, some key players, including quarterback Justin Fields, will not be playing in the game.

Coach Matt Eberflus announced that Fields and select other starters will be sitting out the second preseason game. Instead, it will be an opportunity for the backups, such as P.J. Walker, Nathan Peterman, and undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent, to showcase their skills.

Eberflus mentioned that the team will decide next week whether Fields and other starters will participate in the final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on August 26. Last year, Fields got significant playing time in the third preseason game, but due to the absence of joint practices last summer, the team needs to determine the best course of action for their star quarterback.

During the joint practice, Fields exhibited his talent during seven-on-seven drills in the red zone. He completed all eight of his passes, which included touchdown throws to Darnell Mooney, DJ Moore, Equanimeous St. Brown, and Dante Pettis. The highlight of the drill was Moore’s impressive catch against cornerback Kenny Moore II as he stumbled out of the corner of the end zone.

However, the first-team offense struggled in full-team drills, failing to produce desired results. Left guard Teven Jenkins acknowledged the team’s disappointment but emphasized the ups and downs that come with football. Eberflus expressed his belief that Fields is progressing well in terms of timing and rhythm.

The intense practices also led to a few scuffles between players. While fights are expected during such competitive sessions, Eberflus stressed the need to maintain boundaries and avoid unnecessary aggression. He wants to protect the players and ensure their safety throughout the joint practices.

The Bears also received some good news on the injury front. Defensive end DeMarcus Walker returned to practice after missing two weeks due to an injury. Walker expressed his eagerness to get back on the field and is excited to see what the defensive unit can achieve with his return and the addition of Yannick Ngakoue.

Safety Eddie Jackson and wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. did not participate in practice due to collision-related injuries. However, Eberflus reassured fans that neither injury is severe. Several other players, including Jaquan Brisker, Chase Claypool, and Cody Whitehair, also sat out with minor injuries.

Overall, the joint practices have provided valuable preparation for the Bears as they approach their second preseason game. The team will continue to evaluate their starters’ participation in the final preseason matchup before heading into the regular season.
