Chidambaram on the Reservation Bill for Women and Upcoming Challenges: Karaikudi Updates

by time news

Karaikudi– The reservation bill for women has been passed, but former minister Chidambaram expressed doubts regarding its enforcement. Speaking in Karaikudi, he stated that while the bill has been passed, it will not be implemented at present. He highlighted the history of the bill’s introduction, mentioning that it was originally proposed by Deve Gowda in 1996 and attempted twice by Vajpayee. However, it was only approved in the Rajya Sabha during the Manmohan Singh regime in 2010. Chidambaram stated that if the same draft law is reintroduced and approved, it will come into effect for the 2024 elections.

However, Chidambaram outlined two obstacles hindering the implementation of the reservation bill. First, the next census must take place, and secondly, the re-delimitation of constituencies should occur after the census. He criticized these requirements, deeming them unnecessary obstacles.

In regard to the recent breakup of the ADMK-BJP alliance, Chidambaram stated that while one side might be happy about the split, others may be disappointed. He expressed the belief that the alliance was beneficial and that parting ways was a regrettable decision. Chidambaram also emphasized the importance of not involving politics in the Ram Temple issue, stating that it was incorrect to use it for political gains. As the MP of Tamil Nadu, he emphasized the state’s demand on the Cauvery issue.

Chidambaram also highlighted the shortage of doctors across all hospitals in Tamil Nadu, advocating for the establishment of a new medical college to address this issue. He pointed out that after 2026, if constituency definitions are redefined based on population, there is a risk of losing seats. Additionally, he commented on the fluctuation of petrol and diesel prices, asserting that they tend to decrease as elections approach. Chidambaram criticized the decision to print Rs. 2000 notes, and expressed concerns about their circulation.

Addressing rumors of a split in the India alliance, Chidambaram dismissed them and instead stated that the alliance will strengthen in the future.
