Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee transferred, President approves

President of the Republic of India Ramnath Govind has approved the recommendation of the Collegium to transfer Chennai High Court Chief Justice Sanjeeb Banerjee to the Meghalaya High Court.

The collegium of the Supreme Court has recommended to the Union Law Ministry that the Sanjib Banerjee, who was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court 10 months ago, be transferred to the Meghalaya High Court.

In this context, senior advocates of the Chennai High Court demanded that the collegium reconsider its recommendation. Initially, 237 lawyers wrote the letter, followed by 31 senior lawyers writing to the collegium. A resolution was passed in the Madras Bar Association emphasizing the same demand.

Following that, prosecutors staged a peaceful protest near the entrance of Avin in the Chennai High Court. Many lawyers took part in the protest and demanded that the Chief Justice not be replaced.

In this context, the President of India Ramnath Govind has approved the recommendation of the Collegium to transfer Chief Justice of the Chennai High Court Sanjib Banerjee to the Meghalaya High Court.

The President has reportedly approved the transfer of the Chief Justice under Section 1 of Article 222 of the Constitution.
