Finland is ready to cooperate with the COP29 Presidency to achieve a successful and balanced outcome at the upcoming conference in Baku.

As Day.Az reports, Finland’s chief climate change negotiator and head of the Finnish delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Marjo Nummelin, told Trend about this.

“Since Azerbaijan’s election as COP29 Chair, our negotiators have been engaged in dialogue with colleagues from the Presidency team at various meetings, working as part of the European Union team. It is clear that the Presidency will play a key role in managing the negotiations and providing the necessary political leadership,” she noted.

Nummelin stressed that the outcome of COP29 must be balanced, covering all key issues – climate change mitigation, adaptation and financing.

“One of the key goals for this year is to achieve a new collective goal for climate finance beyond 2025. It is important that the goal includes both public financing and the broader financial flows needed for the global transition to clean energy. No less “It is important that further steps are taken at COP29 to implement the outcome of the Global Inventory completed last year in Dubai, especially with regard to the landmark agreement to transition the energy sector away from fossil fuels and towards clean energy,” the chief negotiator said.

She noted that there was a need to ensure that all countries met this commitment as they prepared their next emissions reduction targets under Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), due next year.

“The new NDCs are essential if we are to maintain the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree target. There are also many other important topics on the agenda, including international market rules and a gender action plan. At every COP, gender is a priority for us: It is important that gender perspectives are fully integrated into climate policy and financing, and that women’s equal participation in climate policy development is ensured at all levels,” Nummelin said.

The Ambassador of Finland to the countries of the South Caucasus, Kirsti Narinen, for her part, noted the prospects for cooperation between the two countries in the field of green energy.

“Finland has made a significant transition to renewable and carbon-free electricity sources in just the last two years, especially in the wind energy sector – thanks to political and financial support from government programs, a desire to end energy trade with Russia, and changing citizen attitudes. Finnish innovation and technology are well known around the world, Finland is more than willing to share its experience of this transition, as well as its experience and knowledge in the field of environmentally friendly technologies and education,” the ambassador said.

She expressed confidence that COP29 will increase public awareness of sustainable development issues in Azerbaijan, and, in particular, interest in training in this area will increase among young people.

Let us recall that the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in November this year in Azerbaijan. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) translated from English means “Conference of Parties”, this is the highest legislative body that controls the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
