Green Party co-leader Omid Nouripour describes the traffic light coalition as a transitional model after the Merkel era. However, he does not see a great future for the alliance.

Green Party co-leader Omid Nouripour sees the traffic light coalition as a dying model. “This coalition is a transitional coalition after the Merkel era,” he said in the summer interview broadcast on ARD on Sunday. He did not want to rule anything out for the future. But in the current constellation with the FDP and SPD, it is obvious that trust has reached its limits.

Limits have also been reached in terms of content. For example, when it comes to raising the necessary funds to drive digitalization forward. This is also evident in the goals of making the railways functional and schools fit for the future: “This is no longer adequately possible in the coalition in this form,” stated Nouripour.

He also referred to the successes of the traffic light coalition, such as the containment of energy prices: “We can actually be proud of that. But we cannot do that because the dispute overshadows everything.” He also no longer believes that this will change. There is “a strange desire” for dispute, but this leads to failure.

Nouripour, who leads the Greens together with Ricarda Lang, does not link the question of a candidate for chancellor to poll numbers. If that were the case, the only other candidate would be the Union with poll numbers of over 30 percent, he said in the ARD online format “Ask yourself”. He left open whether his party would support Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck. Habeck can, however, mobilize and inspire people: “The other parties would like to have someone like Robert Habeck. We have him. That is a huge privilege.”
