Police are investigating a member of the Left Party in the Thuringian state parliament for depictions of child abuse.

The police have searched the office of a Left Party representative in the Thuringian state parliament. According to information from the German Press Agency, the investigation is related to images of child abuse, colloquially known as child pornography. According to the report, there were also searches in other locations. The MDR had previously reported on this. The Erfurt public prosecutor’s office initially did not want to comment on the investigation. A spokesman for the investigative authority did not deny a corresponding MDR report.

The case comes right in the middle of the Thuringian election campaign. A new state parliament will be elected on September 1st. It is still unclear which state parliamentarian is involved.

The leader of the Thuringian Left Party, Steffen Dittes, was shocked. “The seriousness of the criminal charges appalls me,” he wrote in a statement. It is now the task of the public prosecutor’s office and the police to fully investigate the criminal charges. “As a parliamentary group, we have guaranteed all possible support for the investigative work of the public prosecutor’s office and the police and will continue to do so in the further investigations.”
