Widower Seeks Answers in Medical Negligence Case Following Postpartum Brain Bleed

A Luton, England, man is pursuing legal action after his wife tragically died from a brain bleed just 11 days after giving birth to their son via Caesarean section. The case highlights the potential for devastating complications during and after childbirth and raises critical questions about maternity care protocols.

Rafal Kazik, 43, has engaged medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of his wife, Ilona Kazik, 32, at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in February 2023. The couple had spent five years trying to conceive before welcoming their son, Antony.

Timeline of Events: A Mother’s Tragic Journey

Ilona’s ordeal began on February 13, 2023, when she attended the maternity triage unit at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital after her waters broke. An initial examination revealed high blood pressure, and she was prescribed medication before being discharged with instructions to return if her condition worsened. Later that same day, Ilona revisited the hospital complaining of a headache, but was again sent home to await a planned induction of labor.

Despite her continued elevated blood pressure, Ilona underwent a Caesarean section at approximately 5:35 PM on February 14th, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby Antony. Following treatment for an obstetric bleed, she was moved to a recovery ward. However, a subsequent CT scan revealed a bleed on the brain, prompting her transfer to the specialist neurological unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital near Cambridge in the early hours of February 15th. A further scan confirmed a major brain injury, and doctors determined there was nothing further they could do. Ilona’s life support was withdrawn, and she died on February 25, 2023, never having held her son.

Legal Action and the Upcoming Inquest

Rafal Kazik is now seeking answers through an inquest scheduled to begin on November 17th at Lawrence Court in Huntingdon, expected to last up to five days. Daniella Gregory, a specialist medical negligence lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, is representing Mr. Kazik.

“Attempting to try and come to terms with Ilona’s death has been incredibly difficult for Rafal and his family,” Gregory stated. “They have a number of concerns about the circumstances leading up to Ilona’s death. What should have been one of the happiest times in their lives, ended in tragedy.”

Gregory emphasized the importance of the inquest in providing the family with closure and potentially identifying areas for improvement in maternity safety. “While nothing can bring Ilona back, the inquest is a major milestone in being able to provide the family with the answers they deserve. The family hope that this process will shed light on what happened and help them begin to heal.”

She further explained, “High blood pressure during pregnancy and childbirth can lead to serious complications if not treated appropriately. If the inquest identifies any issues in the care Ilona received, it’s vital that lessons are learned to improve maternity safety.”

A Husband’s Heartbreaking Tribute

Rafal Kazik described his wife as a beautiful, fun-loving, and intelligent woman. “Ilona and I met on separate holidays in Egypt in 2016 and we hit it off straight away. She was beautiful, fun and intelligent. Everything just seemed to click,” he shared. He recounted their long journey to parenthood and the joy they felt when Ilona became pregnant.

“We’d been trying for a baby for around five years and were overjoyed when Ilona fell pregnant. Her pregnancy seemed to go smoothly. We were so excited to be welcoming Antony and starting a new chapter in our lives,” he said. “I still struggle to come to terms with how she went into hospital to give birth and never came home.”

The loss has been particularly devastating as Ilona never had the chance to experience motherhood. “Ilona would have been an amazing mum and one of the hardest things to try and come to terms with is how she never got to hold Antony and that she will not see him grow up,” Rafal added. He has since had to give up his job as a construction worker to care for their son.

“It’s almost impossible to find the words to express how traumatic Ilona’s death has been and the impact it’s had on our family,” he continued. “Ilona meant the world to me, and she also leaves behind an endless list of family and friends all of whom, are devastated by her death.”

Rafal expressed his determination to understand the events leading to Ilona’s death, stating, “I know the inquest and listening to the evidence is going to be upsetting but it’s something I need to do, to gain a better understanding of the events that led to her death.”
