Santos Beach

An afternoon on Santos beach, on the coast of São Paulo, turned into an incident that serves as an example of the importance of protecting children. On October 31, two children, a 6-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were found helpless on the beachfront, near the Aparecida neighborhood.

The children were found by municipal guards patrolling the beach. They were sitting on a bench, visibly scared and confused.

The children told the guards that they had been left there by their older brother, just 15 years old, and that they had been alone on the beach for around 40 minutes.

With the absence of those responsible, the municipal guards promptly contacted the Santos Guardianship Council.

This body, whose obligation is to ensure compliance with the rights of children and adolescents, has taken the necessary measures to protect children at risk.

The children were taken to the Santos Women’s Defense Police Station, where the investigation into the case began. Legal procedures were followed to ensure the safety and well-being of minors.

Following the investigation, the children’s mother was charged with abandonment of an incapacitated person at the Santos Civil Police Station.

This is a crime provided for in the Brazilian Penal Code, which punishes anyone who fails to provide necessary assistance to their descendant, abandoning them in a place that could cause danger to their life or health.

After the mother was charged, the children were taken in by Santos City Hall, which placed them under the care of the Reception Section (Seacolhe) of the municipal administration.

The City Hall has assumed responsibility for providing care, protection and emotional support to children while the family situation is assessed by the competent authorities.
