Brasilia: The Ministry of Health has declared a medical emergency in the Yanomami region of Brazil after children died due to malnutrition and other diseases caused by illegal gold mining.

President Lula da Silva’s order in this regard was released on Friday.

“A crime committed by a government (former Bolsonaro government) that has no compassion or understanding for the suffering of the people,” Lula tweeted.

The government has also announced various food packages for the Yanomami.

During the four years of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, 570 Yanomami children died of preventable diseases, Amazon journalism platform Sumauma reported.

Malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and disabilities caused by the mercury used by gold miners mainly affected children.
