We all know how crucial breakfast is to leading a healthy lifestyle. Young people who eat a healthy breakfast at home have better mental health, according to a recent study. This is the first study to examine the reported outcomes of whether children eat breakfast, where and what they eat.

Previous research has highlighted the importance of a healthy breakfast. These findings provide parents and their children with insightful information about breakfast. The study’s findings were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

Dr., a researcher at the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca, Spain. According to José Francisco López-Gil, ‘Our results suggest that not only what breakfast matters, but also where young people eat breakfast.’

‘In children and adolescents, skipping breakfast or eating it at home is associated with increased risk of psychosocial behavior problems. Consumption of specific foods and beverages is associated with increased (eg, processed meats) or decreased (eg, dairy, grains, etc.) risk of psychosocial behavioral problems,’ explained Lopez-Gil.

In the study, López-Gil and colleagues examined data from the 2017 Spanish National Health Survey. The study also included questions about children’s psychosocial health, including characteristics such as self-esteem, mood, and anxiety, as well as breakfast routines.

The research led by Lopez-Gill came to the most important conclusion: Skipping breakfast altogether is just as harmful as not eating at home. Researchers hypothesize that this may be because food eaten outside is less nutrient dense than food eaten at home. The findings also revealed that consumption of foods including coffee, milk, tea, chocolate, cocoa, yogurt, bread, toast, cereals and pastries was associated with increased risk of behavioral problems.
