On June 26, 2023, the Dr. Francisco de Icaza Bustamante Children’s Hospital (HFIB), an establishment of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), will begin the second stage of the surgery days for the placement of cochlear implants that will help improve the quality of life of children with hearing loss.

Cochlear implants are electronic devices that help give a person with severe hearing problems a sensation of sound. These go around the affected parts of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. They are composed of two devices, one internal and one external. The internal one is placed by surgery and the external one behind the ear.

The second phase of the surgical days will be from June 23 to July 1 at the HFIB facilities. Due to the complexity of the interventions, two to three surgeries per day will be performed. The first phase took place between April 17 and 21. The Hospital has been practicing this type of surgery since 2009.

Beneficiary patients are between one and five years of age. They have previously been evaluated by the specialists in otorhinolaryngology and audiology of the health home.

The diagnoses presented by the little ones are prelingual and postlingual, that is, they have lost their hearing before or after speaking.

During surgery, telemetry will be applied, a study that verifies the functioning of the ear and auditory nerve. This allows you to know how effective the implant will be.

Between 20 and 30 days after placement of the internal device, the external processor will be activated.

At the private level, a cochlear implant (device and surgery) has an approximate cost of 35 thousand dollars. The MSP invests in people with hearing disabilities and provides the service for free.
