Chile announced this Thursday that it will close its borders throughout the month of April due to record numbers of new coronavirus cases in the country, which occur in parallel with the successful progress of the vaccination campaign.
In an official report, the undersecretary of crime prevention, Katherine Martorell, announced that “the country’s borders are closed for the entire month of April.”
The measure, which will come into force on Monday, restricts the departure of Chileans and resident foreigners and prohibits the entry of non-resident foreigners.
His announcement coincided with the highest daily number of COVID-19 infections since the start of the pandemic in Chile: 7,830. Meanwhile, the deaths were 193.
With these records, the country surpassed one million infections (1,003,406) and reached 23,328 deaths recorded since the first case detected on March 3, 2020.
“We urgently need to make an additional effort, because we are at a very critical moment in the pandemic,” said government spokesperson Jaime Bellolio.
In the country, health authorities have already detected the presence of the Brazilian and British variants of COVID-19. (01
