by time news

Chile started this week vaccinate children between the ages of 6 and 12 against the coronavirus, therefore, it became the first country in Latin America to extend the vaccination plan to this age group. Yesterday, Tuesday, the Chilean Ministry of Health reported that for the first time since the start of the pandemic, there were no deaths from covid-19.

Just a few days passed between the Chilean health authorities approving the use of the Sinovac vaccine for minors from 6 years of age and starting to apply the doses. This Monday, the vaccination started for adolescents between 14 and 16 and minors over 6 years of age with comorbidities. As of September 27, all children included in that age group will be vaccinated, even without risk factors.

The undersecretary of public health, Paula Daza, specified that parents will have to authorize the inoculation of their children by writing. President Sebastián Piñera announced that children will be vaccinated in educational centers.

Last week, the Institute of Public Health of Chile (ISP) approved the emergency use of the CoronaVac vaccine, which is produced by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac, in boys, girls and adolescents between 6 and 17 years old.

Heriberto García, director of the ISP, assured in a press conference that this authorization for persons under 18 years of age “must be linked in a very relevant way to pharmacovigilance campaigns” and called on parents and guardians to keep a watch on those minors that are inoculated with the drug.

“If you see a situation that warrants medical attention, take your child immediately to the medical center and encourage health professionals to notify the adverse reaction,” advised the specialist. “This puts us at the forefront in the world,” Garcia celebrated.

The Sinovac vaccine is one of the most used in Chile since the national mass vaccination plan began, which accumulates 13,729,381 people immunized with at least one dose. Until now, Chile immunized 72.3 percent of the population with the complete scheme. Of the total injected doses, 19.5 million were with this inoculant.

In addition to Sinovac, Chile also uses AstraZeneca, Pfizer, CanSino, Sputnik V and Johnson & Johnson.

So far, it has accumulated 1,641,526 sick cases and 37,108 deaths due to the coronavirus, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The number of active cases in Chile fell to 3,160 from a high of about 79,000 in June.
