Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in Valparaíso, whose hills were devoured for five days by the deadliest fires ever recorded in Chile, although its residents deal with the fear of new criminal outbreaks.

Under the high summer temperatures, 1,930 firefighters extinguished several hot spots that had been hitting the tourist city of Viña del Mar since last Friday, 120 km from Santiago, at midnight last night.

“The forestry emergency that began on February 2nd”, which left 131 people dead, is considered to have been overcome, the Viña del Mar fire department emergency department reported today. On the hills, however, the affected people set up shop in tents and organized patrols at night, given the suspicion that the fires had been caused.
