Chimborazo has its first water protection area – La Nación 2023

During an event held in the Cebadas parish of the Guamote canton, the Minister of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition, José Antonio Dávalos, established the Ichubamba Retention Water Protection Area (APH), which becomes the first in the province of Chimborazo and at number 27 in the country; and has 4,493.59 hectares of surface.

With this APH, approximately 4,100 inhabitants of the Retén Ichubamba community and adjacent sectors and in general the entire parish of Cebadas will directly benefit, ensuring their human right to water and their food sovereignty with an authorized flow of 418.15 liters per second. .

Juan Cocha, vice president of the Retén Ichubamba community, stated that, “over the years we have seen the scarcity of water and since 2007 our fight began, which today becomes a reality; “We will continue working to conserve and protect our water sources, for the benefit of our children.”

The establishment of the APH Retén Ichubamba had the support of non-governmental organizations such as Conservation International, Nature and Culture International and the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ), who contributed technically and financially to this process.
