China: 60 corona infections – more than 10,000 students should stay in dormitories – foreign policy

by time news

How strict can the corona measures of governments be against their own people? In China there is only one answer to this question: very, very strict!

After a corona outbreak among students, the authorities have quarantined more than 10,000 students. In the metropolis of Dalian in the northeast of the People’s Republic, students were obliged to stay in the rooms of their dormitories or to go to quarantine hotels.

The authorities reacted to around 60 (!) Infections among the students. Across the city, which has more than six million inhabitants, the number of infections was more than 200.

The order is the latest example of the strict “zero covid strategy” pursued by the Chinese government. With curfews, mass tests, contact tracing, quarantine and strict entry restrictions, the country has the virus largely under control.

So far, the rigorous procedure has actually always meant that the mostly small outbreaks could be brought back under control after a few weeks. However, new waves have accumulated since the appearance of the much more contagious Delta variant.

With around 50 new infections per day nationwide, the seven-day incidence in the People’s Republic – i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week – is still not even 0.004.

For comparison: In Germany, the incidence climbed to a new record since the beginning of the pandemic on Monday: the RKI reported a value of 303.0. In Austria the incidence is 837.8 – this is the highest value among the nine neighboring German countries. In Austria, there is a lockdown for unvaccinated people from today.
