China abolished the Strategic Support Force and instead created new military units such as the Intelligence Support Unit, Military Space Unit, and Cyber Unit.
According to China’s official Xinhua News Agency on the 21st, Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the founding conference of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Intelligence Support Unit at the 8/1 Building in Beijing on the afternoon of the 19th. At this event, President Xi presented military flags to Political Commissar Biyi Liwei, the commander of the Intelligence Support Unit and former deputy commander of the first Strategic Support Unit.
According to the decision of the Central Military Commission, the newly created intelligence support unit is directly commanded by the Central Military Commission. In addition, China also established a military space unit, cyber unit, and joint military unit.
The Chinese military has maintained the existing five-service system including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force, and Strategic Support Force. The recently abolished Strategic Support Force was established in late 2015 by integrating intelligence, cyber, and space units.
However, this military reform consists of four military branches, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Rocket Force, and four military branches, including the Intelligence Support Unit, Military Space Unit, Cyber Unit, and Allied Logistics Unit.
After the military award ceremony, President Xi Jinping said, “The information support unit is a newly established strategic military branch and a core unit that oversees the construction and operation of network information systems. It will occupy an important position in the high-quality development of our military and victory in modern warfare.” He continued, “We will strongly support operations, achieve intelligence-led victory, integrate intelligence resources, establish intelligence support accurately and efficiently, and protect the military struggle in all fields.”
According to the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, the decision to establish the intelligence support unit is a strategic measure to complete a modern military power system with Chinese characteristics, made from the perspective of comprehensively strengthening the military industry.
Wu Qian, spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, said, “With this reform, the People’s Liberation Army of China will be divided into four branches under the command of the Central Military Commission, including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, as well as the military space unit, cyber unit, intelligence support unit, and joint logistics unit. “A new structure has been formed,” he said. “As the situation and mission develop, we will continuously improve the military power system with Chinese characteristics.”
Spokesperson Wu Chen said of the newly established military space unit, “The military space unit will improve the ability to safely enter, open and utilize space, and strengthen the efficiency of space crisis control and comprehensive management,” adding, “China promotes the peaceful use of space.” “We have maintained and are willing to contribute to maintaining lasting peace and common security in space.”
“Cybersecurity is a global challenge and a serious security threat facing China,” Wu said. “The construction of cyber forces is very important to strengthen national cyber border defense, detect cyber intrusions in a timely manner, and safeguard national cyber sovereignty and information security.” “He explained the background of its creation.
