China accuses ICC of ‘double standards’ in arrest warrant against Putin

by time news

China denounces the “double standards” of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its decision to issue an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Hague-based ICC on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Putin to face war crime charges, as a suspect in the cases of illegal deportation of children and illegal transfer of people from the territory of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

This Monday, the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, asked the ICC to avoid “politicization and double standards” and “maintain an objective and impartial stance” and “respect the jurisdictional immunity of heads of state in under international law”.

Wang made these statements hours before the start of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official visit to Russia, where he will meet Putin.

In the same regard, the Chinese spokesman clarified that Xi and Putin “are going to practice true multilateralism, promote democracy in international relations and build a multipolar world.”

In the same way, he has indicated that “China will maintain its objective and fair position in the Ukrainian crisis and will play a constructive role in promoting peace negotiations.”

In an article published in Russian media before the start of his trip to Moscow, the Chinese leader called for “pragmatism” in ending the conflict in Ukraine, saying his country’s peace proposal reflects global views and is aimed at neutralize the consequences of the crisis.

Indeed, in a 12-point peace plan released in February, Beijing called for an immediate ceasefire, dialogue, an end to unilateral sanctions and respect for the sovereignty of all countries to replace the continuing fighting in Ukraine.

For his part, Putin said on Sunday that he had “great expectations” about the pending talks with his “good old friend,” while he praised China’s “readiness to help resolve the Ukrainian conflict.”
