China-Africa Cooperation Forum summit begins

The summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has started in Beijing. The FOCAC summit is the largest diplomatic event hosted by China in recent years, attended by more than 3,200 representatives of countries, including more than 50 African leaders.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also participated in the conference.

The theme of this year’s China-Africa Summit is ‘Advancing Modernization and Building a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future’.

The three-day event aims to strengthen friendship between China and Africa and outline future cooperation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech at the opening ceremony on Thursday (September 5) morning.

In his speech, the Chinese president said that for 24 years, China and African people have moved forward jointly on the basis of sincerity. In the context of international changes, China and African countries stand shoulder to shoulder to protect their legitimate rights.

Xi Jinping also said that China wants to work with Africa in 10 projects in the next three years. These include- education, trade, industrial chain partnership, connectivity and development partnership, health sector partnership, agriculture and farmer benefits, human and cultural exchange, green development and security partnership.

In an interview given to CGTN, Antonio Guterres said that China-Africa cooperation will help to deal with inequalities in Africa. It also presents an important opportunity to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Four high-level sessions of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit were also held on Thursday. Governance, industrialization and modernization of agriculture, peace and security, and implementation of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative were discussed in four sessions. Leaders of China and African countries jointly chaired the session.
