Distribution in members-only online group chat rooms
AI also tells you how to ‘take off your clothes’

As crimes using deepfake (AI-based image synthesis) technology are spreading in Korea, the production and distribution of pornography such as ‘strip-snapping (脱衣) using AI (Artificial Intelligence)’ is also emerging as a social problem in China. It was revealed that for 5 yuan (about 900 won) online, you can obtain a nude photo with the desired woman’s face synthesized.

According to the daily Xinjing (新京) Bao on the 28th, there are a lot of online group chat rooms in China that use AI technology to photoshop the faces of female celebrities or famous influencers onto their naked bodies. Most of them are membership-based, and one chat room had 15,000 members. Here, for 5 yuan, you can get a photoshopped photo, and for 20 yuan (about 3,700 won), you can get a video with your face swapped.

One seller said, “I’ve been getting so many orders lately that I can’t even think about taking orders for videos (which take a lot of time).” In addition to creating and selling illegal composite materials, there have even been educational courses on social networking services (SNS) that teach how to use AI technology to take off women’s clothes in photos or videos. Xin Jingbo reported that the production of illegal pornography using AI is forming an “industrial ecosystem.”

In fact, in June, Beijing police arrested a man in his 20s on charges of selling synthetic photos created using AI technology. The man advertised online that he would “make an ‘AI-based undressing’ for 1.5 yuan (about 300 won) per photo,” and many people sent him photos of their coworkers, friends, celebrities, etc. The police investigation revealed that the man sold about 7,000 photos to 351 people.

According to current Chinese law, ‘undressing using AI’ itself is a violation of the Public Security Administration Punishment Law. Also, if it is sold for money, it is also a crime of producing and selling pornography. Acts of teaching synthetic techniques can also be considered aiding and abetting. In China, there is an outlook that authorities will strengthen crackdowns on the production and distribution of pornography using AI in the future.
