The Chinese dominated Haiti (1-0) in a match that sparked many debates on refereeing.

China beat Haiti 1-0 Friday in Adelaide (Australia) after a match punctuated by controversial refereeing decisions, and retains its chances of reaching the knockout stages of the Women’s World Cup. At the same time, the Chinese delayed the accession to the eighth of England, victorious just before Denmark (1-0). The Lionesses lead Group D (six points) ahead of Denmark and China (three points), while Haiti brings up the rear without a single point.

A rare situation could also occur: if the Chinese beat England and Denmark win against Haiti on the last day of the group stage, the first three teams would be held within six points. They would then be decided by overall goal difference, then by the greatest number of goals scored at the end of the group matches.

Penalty judged for Haiti

But the points obtained by China on Friday are likely to be talked about. In three acts, the VAR decided the fate of this match. First when the referee, Marta Huerta de Aza, preferred the red card to the yellow towards the Chinese N.10 Rui Zhang, guilty of a nasty sole on the knee of Kethna Louis (29th).

Previously dominated, the Haitians obtained several chances, before the referee again called on the VAR, this time to award a penalty – justified – to China, converted by Shuang Wang (74th). But she could have granted another to the Chinese a few minutes later. At the very end of the match, Marta Huerta de Aza again raised the whistle to her mouth to award a penalty to Haiti, this time, then decided against after a new consultation of the VAR. During the meeting, other arbitration decisions enraged the French coach of Haiti Nicolas Delépine.
