On the 14th, the Chinese military will mobilize its army, navy, air force, and rocket forces to conduct military training in the form of a siege of Taiwan.
The Eastern Theater of the People’s Liberation Army of China announced this morning, “We will conduct joint exercise Li Jian (Sharp Knife)-2024B” in the Taiwan Strait and the northern, southern, and eastern regions of Taiwan Island.
Li Si, spokesman for the Eastern Theater, said, “Warships and aircraft will approach Taiwan Island from multiple directions, and all military branches will jointly charge,” adding, “We will conduct maritime and air combat preparations, surveillance, patrols, blockade of major ports and areas, and anti-tank action.” )We will focus on training on sea and land strikes, seizing comprehensive control, etc. to check the unit’s joint operation capabilities.”
He continued, “This is a strong fear of the ‘independence’-promoting actions of the ‘Taiwan independence’ division forces, and a justifiable and necessary action to protect national sovereignty and national unity.”
The Chinese military did not specify when this training would end.
About an hour after the Chinese military’s announcement, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense responded, saying, “We strongly condemn this unreasonable act of provocation.”
This training is interpreted as targeting Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-de’s remarks during a speech at the National Day (Double Twelfth Day) event on the 10th. President Lai said at the time, “Currently, the Republic of China (Taiwan) has already taken root in Tai, Feng, Jin, and Ma (Taiwan’s main island and areas such as Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu) and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China (China).” “The People’s Republic of China has no right to represent Taiwan,” he said.
The Liberation Army, a Chinese military newspaper, said on this day, “Lai Qingde forcefully injected his claim of ‘independence’ in the Twin Ten Day Discourse to provide the basis for a divided nation, and advocated ‘democracy and freedom against power’ to support independence dependent on external forces. “They are trying to tie Taiwan to the tank called ‘Taiwan independence’,” he warned, adding, “If you play with fire, you will definitely burn to death.”
This is the first time in about five months that the Chinese military has conducted large-scale military training in the waters around Taiwan. The Chinese military criticized President Lai for including claims of independence in his inauguration speech and conducted ‘Regen-2024A’, a Taiwan siege exercise, on May 23-24.
