China opposed US sanctions on Nord Stream 2, as well as the politicization of commercial projects in general. This was stated by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Zhao Lijian.
“We are against the politicization of commercial projects, against unilateral sanctions … Such actions by the United States are pure hegemonism, violating the fundamental norms of international law,” he said at a briefing (quoted by TASS).
On November 16, Germany suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as the operator of Nord Stream 2. On Monday, November 22, the United States announced restrictions on the Cypriot company Transadria Ltd., whose vessel was involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2. Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov linked the expansion of sanctions on Nord Stream 2 with unfair competition. The State Department promised to continue work to curb the launch of the Russian gas pipeline. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that for Moscow the gas pipeline is an exclusively economic project and is not going to be used for geopolitical purposes. The Kremlin called the new US sanctions illegal and inappropriate. The “greens” in the FRG consider them unacceptable.
