Japan’s Defense Ministry’s Defense White Paper Concerns ‘Biggest Strategic Challenge’
Chinese Foreign Ministry: “Japan has no right to talk nonsense”
On the 12th, the Chinese government poured out criticism of the Japanese government’s defense white paper containing concerns about China’s military activities, calling it “interference in internal affairs.”
Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a regular briefing that day, “Japan’s defense white paper is coarsely interfering in China’s internal affairs,” and “it is repeating the same old rhetoric about the so-called ‘China threat’ and making the regional situation tense.”
He then protested, saying, “China expresses strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition to this.”
Spokesperson Lin said, “China adheres to the path of peaceful development and upholds a defensive national defense policy,” adding, “National defense construction and military activities are legitimate and reasonable, and joint cruises with other countries are in line with international law and international practice.”
He also emphasized that “Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory, and the Taiwan issue is purely China’s internal affair, and no external force may interfere.”
Spokesperson Lin said, “The fundamental cause of the tensions in the Taiwan Strait in recent years is that ‘Taiwan independence’ separatists have pursued separatist activities by any means necessary, with the toleration and support of external forces.” He added, “Japan, which once invaded and colonized Taiwan, has grave historical guilt against the Chinese people and has no right to talk nonsense on the Taiwan issue.”
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on that day, the Japanese Ministry of Defense maintained its view in the 2024 Defense White Paper that China’s military trends are “a matter of serious concern for Japan and the international community and represent the greatest strategic challenge of all time.”
In addition, considering that the Chinese military continues to actively engage in military activities around Taiwan, it was analyzed that there is a possibility that the military training around Taiwan conducted in August of last year was a rehearsal for a part of the operation to invade Taiwan.
