The findings also shed light on how Earth’s magnetic field acts as a speed-governing barrier. As the Moon orbits Earth, its near side occasionally enters the magnetosheath, a region where solar wind particles slow to about 200 km/s. This reduced energy limits how deeply particles implant into the regolith, whereas the far side remains exposed to unimpeded solar wind. The research team estimates that 25% of solar wind exposure at the near-side Chang’e-5 site involved this slower flow, a contrast absent at the far-side Chang’e-6 site.
