China is on track to sharply reduce electricity generation from coal plants. This is according to an analysis by environmental organizations Global Energy Monitor and the Center for Research in Energy and Clean Air (CREA), presented today and cited by DPA.

The authors of the study indicate that in the first half of 2024, the Chinese authorities approved significantly fewer projects for the construction of thermal power plants (TPP) compared to the same period last year.

The construction of facilities with a total capacity of only 9 gigawatts has been approved, the analysis indicates. This represents a drop of 83 percent compared to the first six months of 2023.

In 2022 and 2023, projects for the construction of new coal-fired power plants with a total capacity of 100 gigawatts have been approved in China, the authors of the report note.

Experts point out that the construction of some Chinese coal-fired power plants, for which permits have been issued, has not yet started, writes BTA.

In the first half of the year, however, the construction of coal-fired power plants started in China, with a total capacity of 41 gigawatts.

Analysts say the delay in issuing new permits for coal plants is due to the Asian country’s accelerated construction of renewable power generation capacity.
