China fears strongest typhoon in 10 years

Typhoon Yagi, the 11th typhoon, passed the Philippines on the 6th and is moving between Guangdong and Hainan provinces in China. The Chinese meteorological authorities have issued a red typhoon warning, the highest level.

According to our Korea Meteorological Administration, at around 3:00 PM today, Yagi will pass about 360 km southeast of Zhanjiang, China (near Haikou, Hainan Province) as a super typhoon. It is expected to reach land about 200 km east of Hanoi, Vietnam on the afternoon of the 7th.

The China Central Meteorological Observatory issued a typhoon red alert at 6 a.m. the previous day. The maximum wind speed is expected to reach 55 m/s (198 km/h) when the typhoon passes near Haikou.

China is on high alert amid speculation that this typhoon could be recorded as the strongest to hit China in the past 10 years.

Zhanjiang City has issued a 5-day school closure order and suspended flights. It has also implemented a suspension of operations. Zhuhai City and Maoming City in Guangdong Province have also issued school closure orders. Factories and supermarkets in Haikou have closed. Hong Kong has issued a 6-day school closure order.

In the Philippines, where the typhoon has already passed, floods and landslides have occurred, killing at least 16 people and leaving 21 missing.

According to the Associated Press and other news agencies, nine people died from floods and landslides in Rizal province, east of Manila. Five people drowned and one died from electrocution in Cebu, Negros Occidental and Northern Samar provinces.
