China released four Taiwanese and Indonesian fishermen on the 13th after detaining them for more than 40 days for violating the country’s fishing holiday regulations.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, Chinese authorities released four crew members of the Taiwanese-flagged Dajinman 88 this morning.

The four people released are Taiwanese fisherman Ding and three Indonesian fishermen.

The captain, a Taiwanese national, Mr. Hung, is expected to be released along with the fishing boat at a later date as legal proceedings remain pending.

The Chinese Coast Guard also confirmed the release of the Taiwanese sailors via WeChat, adding, “Considering the minor nature of the case, we decided not to hold these four individuals criminally responsible and to send them back to Taiwan.”

On that day, the Chinese side transported four crew members on a small boat to the median line of the Taiwan Strait and handed them over to the Taiwanese side. Afterwards, the four crew members returned to Penghu on the Taiwanese fishing boat Dajinman 96.

The Taiwanese Penghu registered Dajinman 88 was intercepted by a Chinese Coast Guard vessel while fishing in the waters east of Kinmen Island on the evening of July 2. The Dajinman 88 was carrying two Taiwanese and three Indonesian crew members.

The area where the fishing boat was captured is known to be 11.2 nautical miles (approximately 21 km) away from Jinjiang, China, and is known to be part of Chinese territorial waters.

The Chinese Coast Guard claimed that the Dajinman 88 was captured for violating regulations such as the ban on fishing during the off-season and the ban on using bottom trawls.

It appears that Chinese authorities have decided to release the detained fishermen as the aftermath of the February 14 incident that killed Chinese fishermen was finalized at the end of last month.

On February 14, a Chinese fishing boat capsized near Kinmen Island while trying to avoid inspection by the Taiwan Coast Guard, killing two Chinese nationals.

This incident heightened tensions between the two sides, but on the 30th of last month, the two sides reached an agreement on how to deal with the aftermath of the incident.
