China’s foreign ministry said Beijing has suspended nuclear arms control talks with the United States in protest at Washington’s arms sales to Taiwan, Reuters reported.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jiang said repeated US arms sales to Taiwan in recent months had “seriously compromised the political atmosphere for continuing arms control consultations”.
“As a result, the Chinese side has decided to postpone the discussion with the US on a new round of consultations on the issues of arms control and non-proliferation. The responsibility lies entirely with the US,” Lin said at a regular briefing in Beijing, quoted by BTA.
The spokesman noted that China is willing to maintain communication on international arms control issues, but that the US “must respect China’s core interests and create the necessary conditions for dialogue and exchange.”
The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.
