Colombo: Sri Lanka has banned Chinese spy ships from entering its ports. China does not like this at all. A top Chinese diplomat has said that China is unhappy with the ban on research ships in Sri Lankan waters. At the same time, taking an indirect dig at India, he said that some countries consider this as their diplomatic victory, but it is not so. In fact, concerns have always been raised about China’s alleged research ships. India has been saying that in the name of research, these ships spy and collect information that will help China in the war. According to the Daily Mirror report, while talking to journalists at the Exhibition Center in Colombo Port City, Deputy Chief of the Chinese Embassy Yanwei Zhu also tried to put pressure on Sri Lanka. He said, ‘People on social media in China are expressing concern about why Sri Lanka is a friendly country, when it has taken such a step.’ He indirectly said that Sri Lanka has stopped the Chinese ships at the behest of India. “Some countries regard the move at the behest of a third party as a diplomatic victory,” Zhu said.

‘China does not want to take advantage’

He further said, ‘China is silent because it is not interested in taking advantage of Sri Lanka’s difficult situation.’ He also said that China respects Sri Lanka’s independence and sovereignty. He said, ‘If this is Sri Lanka’s independent decision. There is a rumor that this has been done under the influence of other countries.’ Apart from this, he said that Sri Lankan officials do not have the ability to do such research and China has come forward to help. No other country has come forward to help like this.

Sri Lanka imposed a one year ban

Sri Lanka has this year banned any research ship from stopping at its ports or operating inside its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for one year. In the year 2023, PM Modi had a meeting with President Ranil Wickremesinghe. In this, he urged to respect India’s strategic and security concerns. Sri Lanka had informed India about the ban on the stopping of foreign research ships. This was a big blow to China from Sri Lanka.
