India had expressed concern over China’s power project on these islands, 50 km from Tamil Nadu. Moreover, India offered to do the same project with a subsidy without a loan. Therefore, Sri Lanka immediately terminated the agreement with China. Dissatisfied with this, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka strongly opposed the Sri Lankan government’s move.
In this context, Indian Foreign Minister Jaisankar called on Sri Lankan Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa in person. During the meeting, Jaisankar assured that India was ready to provide various economic assistance to Sri Lanka, which is facing a severe economic crisis. India has already provided billions of rupees in financial assistance to Sri Lanka. In this context, the Government of Sri Lanka is pleased that India is ready to provide further economic assistance.
Following the meeting, the Sri Lankan government offered to transfer power generation projects from China to India. Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar called on Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Beiris. At that time, important agreements were signed between the two countries. India also signed an agreement to implement power generation projects in the Tamil-majority north-eastern region.
