O Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong and other ships crossed, this Saturday (27), the Taiwan Straitinformed the country’s defense ministry in a statement.
“A flotilla of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, headed by the aircraft carrier ‘Shandong’, crossed the Taiwan Strait around noon” on Saturday, according to the ministry.
The Shandong sailed “west of the median line, heading north”, he added in a reference to the official border in the middle of the strait.
China does not recognize this invisible border unilaterally drawn by the United States during the Cold War.
Taiwan constantly monitors the presence of ships from China and makes practically a daily violation announcement.
Even so, the journey from Shandong through the 180 km wide strait that separates the island from the Asian mainland is unusual.
Taiwan’s military “is monitoring the situation and has deployed [de patrulha aérea civil]combat ships and land missile systems that respond to these activities”, declared the Ministry of Defense.
Relations between China and Taiwan, which have hit rock bottom since Xi Jinping came to power in Beijing more than 10 years ago, have deteriorated even more recently. China has stepped up military incursions around the island.
