China and Russia want to strengthen their cooperation. Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg that “multipolarization” in the world is progressing faster in the face of a confused international situation, as the Foreign Ministry in Beijing announced on Thursday night (local time).

China’s leader Xi Jinping said, according to Wang Yi, that the world is entering a major change that has not been seen in 100 years. Russia and China should therefore safeguard the rights and interests of both sides to make a new effort to develop the international order in a just and reasonable direction, it said. According to Chinese sources, Putin and Wang Yi also discussed the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine during the conversation on Wednesday. The Kremlin chief signaled Russia’s willingness to resolve the conflict through negotiations.

China is an important partner of Russia. Putin said he accepted Xi Jinping’s invitation to come to China in October for the Silk Road summit, the Russian news agency TASS reported.

In the Ukraine war, the People’s Republic officially presents itself as neutral, but supports the neighboring country. Addressing the UN Security Council on Wednesday, China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu emphasized that China wanted to play a “constructive role in a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.”
