During negotiations on Monday with Deputy General Director of the state corporation China Railways Sun Suyude, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CJSC Azerbaijan Railways (AR) Rovshan Rustamov discussed increasing freight traffic along the Middle Corridor.

Day.Az reported this on Monday with reference to AJD.

“The discussion focused on increasing the competitiveness of the Middle Corridor, increasing container traffic, allocating subsidies for transit cargo transportation by rail through the territory of Azerbaijan, and making wider use of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) route,” the statement said.

There was also an exchange of views on the issues of providing electronic declarations for cargo on trains, accelerating the approval of documents for cargo during customs control, which will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of cargo delivery along the Middle Corridor.

The parties noted the importance of signing the Joint Declaration on July 3 in Astana as part of the events of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which will ensure the uninterrupted operation of international transport corridors and the creation of favorable conditions for transit traffic.

It was also emphasized that the Chinese side wants to join the joint venture (JV) “Middle Corridor Multimodal Ltd”, created by Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Georgia to develop the railway segment of the Middle Corridor.

It should be noted that the Middle Corridor, which celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, has been increasing its freight traffic over the past two years.

Thus, in 2023, 2.7 million tons of cargo passed through it (an increase of 86% compared to 2022), and in 2024 the volume may exceed 4.2 million tons.
