CNN reported that Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan (40), who publicized the severity of Wuhan, China in the early stages of COVID-19, will be released on the 13th (local time) after serving four years in prison.

Jang Jan, a former lawyer, infiltrated Wuhan, where a lockdown was in effect at the time, and garnered attention as a citizen journalist by reporting the facts without filtering.

He was detained in May 2020 and later sentenced to four years in prison on charges of “causing social chaos” in court.

Ahead of Mr. Zhang’s release, supporters and human rights groups called on the Chinese government to release him.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which awarded the Press Freedom Award to Mr. Jang in 2021, said on social media “We urge you to put pressure on the authorities.”

Mr. Zhang stayed in Wuhan for more than three months and recorded the harsh realities experienced by Wuhan residents, including hospitals overflowing with patients and empty stores due to the lockdown.

He informed the outside world of the on-site situation through WeChat, Twitter, YouTube, etc.

Two weeks after arriving in Wuhan, Mr. Zhang said in a video wearing a mask, “I don’t know what to say because everything is under control. “Our opposing opinions are dismissed as ‘rumors’ by the authorities,” he criticized.

It is reported that his health deteriorated rapidly while he was serving his sentence.

Mr. Jang went on hunger strike several times while incarcerated, and supporters and civic groups expressed concerns about his health. Jang’s mother said her daughter was so weak that she was unable to keep her head up and that she desperately needed medical help.

Human rights group Amnesty International revealed that when Mr. Jang refused to eat at the detention facility, the authorities forcibly fed him food or made him live in shackles and handcuffs.

In the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Press Freedom Index, China ranked 172nd out of 180 countries.

In a statement released in July 2020, China said, “China did not crack down on journalists during the pandemic,” and “the Chinese government responded to COVID-19 in an open and transparent manner.”
